What a fantastic idea! Two young activists managed to create a vegan leather made with coconut water! And without any suffering animals.
The initial idea of Zuzana Gombosova and Susmith C Suseelan was to reduce the environmental impact of livestock and with vegan leather they found the solution that can revolutionize the fashion world.
Their startup is based in India, based in Kerala, and is called Malai Biomaterials Design Pvt Ltd.
The most amazing thing is that their vegan leather, made with biocomposite material, has the appearance and even the texture of ordinary leather.
“This flexible biocomposite material has a circular life cycle. We use raw materials such as coconut residues, banana stems, sisal fiber and hemp fiber, which do not require any use of energy or chemicals ”, they stated.
And they explained that it is also biodegradable: “The final product is biodegradable and can decompose in 150 days. Our product is vegan and environmentally friendly, ”said Zuzana Gombosova, the company's co-founder, in an interview with The Better India (TBI).
Zuzana is a Slovak designer based in India, who developed the material together with Susmith C Suseelan, an engineer Kerala.
With a passion for both in the fashion industry, with deep concern for the environment, the duo spent almost a year perfecting the product and launching it for the company.
And the invention, which is born a drupa (a fruit with internal pulp and a seed surrounded by a hard peel), already has important customers in countries in Europe and the United States.
They supply eco leather to companies like Crafting Plastics, TON, Ma -tt-er and Kazeto, which make bags, laptop bags, belts, bags and backpacks, among others.
