China wants negotiation with all Mercosur, says Chinese ambassador in Uruguay

China's ambassador to Uruguay, Wang Gang, expressed Beijing's “open attitude” to all Mercosur and interest in a “bilateral or block” trade agreement with Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil when “everyone is ready”. The information is the MercoPress portal.

The attempted rapprochement happened on Thursday (6) while negotiators Montevideo and Beijing were discussing in a virtual forum about the probability of the South American country attracting more Chinese investments.

A day earlier, the Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, generated controversy by insinuating that the origin of Covid-19 would be a “new chemical war” perpetrated by China. "We are firmly opposed to any attempt to politicize and stigmatize the virus," replied Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin.

Chinese participation in Mercosur exports has skyrocketed in recent decades, 2% in 2000 to 22% in 2018. The bloc's countries have also imported more products since the beginning of the millennium: imports of Chinese products have increased 3% to 19% of the total , according to the German Ifo Institute.

Uruguay prioritizes China

Uruguay, on the other hand, classified China as a “priority partner”. “China is our main trading partner,” said Gabriela González, deputy director of bilateral economic affairs. "We want to continue working in this area and deepen it".

Chinese importers were responsible for buying a quarter of all export orders Uruguay between January and April 2021. The value in business reached US $ 658 million - more than R $ 3.4 billion.

The Chinese ambassador in Montevideo signaled that Uruguay should join the Silk Road Belt initiative - a global infrastructure investment program. The country also has expectations of leveraging Chinese tourism in its territory, pointed out the Beijing state agency Xinhua.
