Afghanistan faces new outbreak with 2400% increase in Covid-19 cases

Violence is not the only obstacle facing Afghanistan. Now, the country scarred by wars is also trying to deal with a 2,400% increase in Covid-19 cases, amid the overcrowded hospital network and the shortage of vaccines.

The alert came the International Federation of the Red Cross, on Thursday (17). According to the humanitarian organization, more than a third of the tests carried out in the last week were positive. “Critical point”, classified the entity.

At least 90% of hospital beds are filled in Kabul and the country's major cities. Afghanistan also reached its record of deaths in the last 24 hours: 101 were killed by the virus.

Infected patients share the already vulnerable health care system with others wounded almost daily in armed clashes between Taliban and Afghan government forces. The violence escalated after the US announced an extension of the deadline to keep its troops in the country until September 11th.

shortage of vaccines

The lack of vaccines is also a concern. As of Thursday, less than 0.5% of Afghans had been vaccinated. The Ministry of Health announced that it will start immunization for people over 55 and people with chronic diseases after receiving 700,000 doses of Chinese Sinopharm, on the 10th.

Before, the country had only received 486,000 doses via Covax, the WHO (World Health Organization), and another 500,000 the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, manufactured by India, in February – insufficient quota to immunize its more than 38 million inhabitants.

Last Friday (11), Amnesty International demanded better preparation of the Afghan government to deal with the health crisis. The Afghan Ministry of Health would have only 2,000 oxygen concentrators and 1,063 hospital beds to care for those infected with the virus. The government says it has more than 1.5 thousand.

On the same day, the US announced $226 million in additional aid to the country, according to The New York Times daily. The sharpest increase in cases in Afghanistan began in mid-May. The country has more than 93 thousand infected and about 3,700 deaths the virus.
